The V12s used the normal 4-synch box and you can fit plain or overdrive electric 5th gear equally easily as a direct swap for the auto box which is identical in length to the LWB or OD four speed.
Anyway, the biggest improvement when installing a manual box is that besides the gear shifting pleasure while spirited driving on winding roads , the automatic V12 XJ-S is only a fast car at speeds where it is illegal to drive it, whereas a manual V12 XJ-S is quick in all the speed range.
But remember that it will never be a light car weighs around 2. Think of it as an agile and comfortable Grand Tourismo and not as a sports car. Much depends on how much care the previous owner lavished on the car…something that varies quite a bit.
The typical scenario with a used XJS is to spend and chunk of time and money sorting the repairs and services neglected by the previous owner and then enjoy the car with just an occasional weekend of tinkering. And most of us enjoy the tinkering so its not a hardship anyway. My 90 convertible was converted using a Getrag 5 speed tranny. It is a fun car to drive. The torque really kicks in around rpm and holds past I think a better induction system should improve on the upper figure a bit.
Hey Im in ellicott city MD. I would like to see that. I have a 96 6cyl and Im thinking of converting it. I have what I think is one of the 10 or Convertible manual 5-speeds. A review of the car on cars. My clutch foot either gets stuck on the carpet or behind the knee bolster. And for my right foot, if I put the right side of it against the transmission hump, the left size still touches the brake pedal!
Perhaps what you realy needs is a semi trailer. Cars like the XJS are starting to disappear, as emission regulations turn V12 engines into relics of the past. Thanks to the car's long production lifecycle, used XJS examples are now very affordable. Of course, this is a luxury V12 GT car built in England, so we'd suggest paying up for a good one. Due to the high production numbers, the XJS may never become a collector's item, but the same could have been said of certain Porsche models, and we all know what happened to the prices of those cars.
Even though these cars are cheap to buy, they are notoriously expensive to own. Even the youngest XJS is now a year old car, and parts are going to need to be replaced. If you fancy the idea of owning a gorgeous grand touring car with a V12 engine, here are some issues you should watch out for. Fuel hoses in the engine are known to deteriorate over time, causing engine fires. The upper shock bushing are prone to failure resulting in a rattling noise over bumps.
If you do decide to own one of these cars, you'd better be very handy and resourceful or know a very good mechanic. The good news is, the XJS is so plentiful, it isn't too difficult to buy a spare one to use as a parts car. Our recommendation would be to search online forums to find details on the exact year, engine, and transmission of the XJS you want to buy.
Jaguar built so many combinations of the XJS, it is hard to sum up all of the issues in one place. Owning an XJS may not be easy, but it can be a very rewarding experience with a big payoff once all of the good ones are gone. A bellhousing from an XK, a starter from a Mark 2 and a flywheel from a 4. All three must be compatible and from the same application. The T-5 modified transmissions offered for this conversion are not as strong and durable as the original 4-speeds.
The Moss 4-speed is a very good transmission when properly rebuilt and the driver knows how to shift it. We rebuild these transmissions and offer re-machining of the synchros so they shift better than new. The original transmission can be rebuilt. The better course might be to put a taller gear in the rear to lower engine RPM at road speed. We offer rebuild service on the differentials and can change the ring and pinion to a taller ratio. This kit converts an automatic pedal box to manual.
